The cool season, running from late July through late September, offers only modest relief, with highs staying below 33.3 degrees. The city sits along the seasonal Ngadda River, which vanishes into the Firki swamps near Lake Chad. Colonial administrators recognized the punishing sun and made tree planting a priority; the large trees lining major roads still provide shade.
